My wife and I love to clown around and play with one another. One of her favorite ways to ‘annoy’ me sometimes is to ignore me.
The fact that she doesn’t respond doesn’t mean that she didn’t see, hear or notice me. She is making a deliberate attempt not respond…that takes effort.
So many times creatives, writers, artists, musicians, ministers, etc. can become frustrated when they feel they are being ignored.
Let me give you a quick word of encouragement.
It can be painful when people who are close to you…acquaintances…peers don’t acknowledge what you release from your heart.
But remember this.
YOU CAN’T IGNORE WHAT YOU HAVEN’T NOTICED!
Just as when my wife is teasing with me…it takes effort to ignore someone. There’s always a reason that people ignore you. Sometimes its…
Envy
Jealousy
Pride
Simply not wanting you to know that they see what God has allowed you to accomplish.
So, don’t get too upset when you’re pretty sure that you’re being deliberately ignored. That’s confirmation that you’re making an impact. And, the impression that you made is still a seed planted, even if you’re ignored.
Matthew 10:14 (ESV)
14ย And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words,ย shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town.
Work life can be challenging. The pressures of jobs and careers can keep your mind racing all night long and even threaten marriages and family life.
Much of this stress comes from people being overwhelmed because of unrealistic expectations and unhealthy work cultures. However, much of this could be avoided.
Many times dysfunction, inefficiency and ineffectiveness can be deflected down the hierarchy of organizations placing the blame on each lower level of management and responsibility. However, many managers continue to add to an unrealistic list of tasks and expect the people they manage to maintain high levels of production, quality, effectiveness, efficiency, etc.
For example, if a manager assigns 15 tasks that require 1 hour to be accomplished in an 8 hour work day…it’s not going to happen.
From corporate America to education to manufacturing…unrealistic expectations is poisoning the cultures of workplaces around the world.
Here’s the problem. Multitasking is a myth. It is impossible. Two objects of matter can’t occupy the same space at the same time. You can only have one thing on your mind at a time. It is impossible to think about two things at the same time…impossible.
Just like computers, people have a maximum bandwidth.
How many times are employees accused of poor time management when management is doing a poor job of managing available human ‘bandwidth — Simply handing out more tasks isn’t ‘managing’.
I love America and I think it is a great country in which to live. I am thankful to God for allowing me to be a citizen of this country. But, am I ‘proud’ of America? No! Why? Simply because God forbids any form of pride. We are not to be ‘proud’ of our country, family, accomplishments or anything…but rather be thankful.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NKJV)
18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
I know people ‘push back’ on that notion, but the fact is that:
GOD HATES PRIDE! GOD HATES PRIDE! GOD HATES PRIDE!
Proverbs 6:16-19 (NKJV)
16 These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to [a]Him: 17 A[b] proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, 19 A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.
James 4:6 (NKJV)
6 But He gives more grace. Therefore He says:โGod resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.โ
Proverbs 16:18 (NKJV)
18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before [a]a fall.
However, pride has become the accepted abomination in America. Those who claim to be Christians have subtly become infected with the plague of pride, arrogance, self-righteousness and hypocrisy…and the enemy has blinded them that they can’t see it.
People feel justified in rejecting the sins of abortion and homosexuality (and yes, they are sins) while accepting, excusing, justifying and possessing the pride that God hates.
Pride is the first mentioned among the seven deadly sins because it is the ‘parent’ sin to countless ‘offspring’ sins!
If you read the bible carefully, Israel and Judah weren’t rejected because of the heathens, prostitutes, and the ‘overt’ sinners in the land, but they rejected because of the PRIDE of those who called themselves to be the children of God…
Jeremiah 13:8-11 (NKJV)
8 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 9 โThus says the Lord: โIn this manner I will ruin the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem.10 This evil people, who refuse to hear My words, who follow[a] the dictates of their hearts, and walk after other gods to serve them and worship them, shall be just like this sash which is profitable for nothing. 11 For as the sash clings to the waist of a man, so I have caused the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah to cling to Me,โ says the Lord, โthat they may become My people, for renown, for praise, and for glory; but they would not hear.โ
Too many people in America only see America as always the HERO or the ‘HOLY VICTIM’. I love America, but we (none of us) have not ALWAYS been the hero.
Too many people only see America as:
Israel and never Egypt…
Joseph and never his brothers who sold him into slavery…
Esther & Mordecai and never Haman…
Israel/Judah and never Assyria…
Israel/Judah and never Babylon…
Jesus and never Judas…
Jesus and never the Pharisees…
Jesus and never Herod…
Jesus and never Pilate…
Israel and never the Romans…
And, even when America sees itself as Israel, too many in America never see themselves as REBUKED ISRAEL which God is holding accountable for their sins, but only heroic, victorious or restored Israel.
The bible is full of accounts of Israel being rebuked for not only their sins, but not rejecting the sins of their ‘fathers’. Instead, too many sins of America’s past are celebrated as ‘history’ and ‘heritage’. God has proven that everything about our past should not only go uncelebrated, but should be confessed and repented…
Leviticus 26:39-42 (NKJV)
39 And those of you who are left shall [a]waste away in their iniquity in your enemiesโ lands; also in their fathersโ iniquities, which are with them, they shall waste away.
40 โBut if they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers, with their unfaithfulness in which they were unfaithful to Me, and that they also have walked contrary to Me,
41 and that I also have walked contrary to them and have brought them into the land of their enemies;if their uncircumcised hearts are humbled, and they accept their guiltโ
42 then I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and My covenant with Isaac and My covenant with Abraham I will remember;
I will remember the land.
Remember this, for restoration, God called for those who call themselves to be His to repent, not the ‘overt’ sinners in the land…
2 Chronicles 7:14 (NKJV)
14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land
To many, so-called patriotism has become a form of idolatry. Pride will destroy American before anything else does.
You’ve seen it happen before. Anger always comes back…usually harder.
Words and actions released in anger always come back, but rarely return in peace. Only love can cool anger’s searing heat.
Put your anger in check before it turns into wrath, because even though love conquers wrath, sometimes the damage remains.
Wrath kills…both figuratively and literally.
Anger is a seed, if it is used wisely, it can ignite passion that allows love to diffuse the anger and plant seeds that lead to good fruit…
Such as being angry enough at wrong to do something about it…
Such as not returning an insult, can end an argument and lead to a lifelong friendship.
If anger is NOT put in check, it ignites emotions that allow wrath to plant weeds instead of good seeds…
Such as returning an insult can lead to a fight, and animosity that lasts for years and spreads to others…anger is a seed.
The next time you’re angry, stop, think…let your anger cease before you speak or act, if you don’t, not only will come back, but it can come back harder…JUST LIKE ABOOMERANG.
Psalms 37:8 “Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fretโit only causes harm.” Proverbs 15:1 “A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger. 1 Peter 4:8.” “And above all things have fervent love for one another, for โlove will cover a multitude of sins.โ
Having you ever noticed a child throwing a temper tantrum when he or she doesnโt get something that they want? This is a natural reaction that must be overcome as the child matures. The reaction is naturalโฆinnateโฆthe child was born with it.
As you know, the debate continues as to whether people are born gay, or is it a choice. The purpose of this article isn’t to debate that question, but to address this fact…
The truth is that we are all born with innate desires, feelings and proclivities that we did not ask for.
Many Christians reason to excuse some behaviors by saying, โI or they was or were born this wayโ.
This doesnโt mean that God made a mistake because the scripture clearly reminds us that we were all born in sinโฆ
Psalm 51:5 (NKJV)
Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
We were all born with desires we didnโt ask forโฆthat doesnโt make them ALL okay. Just because it comes naturally doesnโt make right. Some natural desires we must resist with the help of the Holy Spiritโฆ
Fornicationโฆ
Adulteryโฆ
Homosexualityโฆ
Gluttonyโฆ
Greedโฆ
Jealousyโฆ
Envyโฆ
Wrath โฆ
โฆALL come from natural desires and they are ALL EQUALLY wrong.
Even David, a man after Godโs own heart was born with an insatiable desire for womenโฆbut that did not make it right or acceptable to God. Those who read the bible know what that led to.
Some people are naturally more greedy, more lustful, more promiscuous, more selfish, more aggressive, more violent that othersโฆdoes that make it okay? For those who wish to argue these are learned behaviors, some people have these behaviors modeled and โlearnโ them, while others witnessed these behaviors and didnโt succumb to them.
Pedophiles donโt feel they โchooseโ to be attracted to childrenโฆdoes that make it okay? No!
The desires of our flesh war against our spiritโฆand these vary from person to person.
Galatians 5:17 (NKJV)
17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.
It is only by walking in the Fruit of the Spirit can we overcome our fleshly desires that displease God.
Galatians 5:16 (NKJV)
I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
Galatians 5:22,23
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
By the way, calling out something as sin is NOT judging. And, it’s not saying it’s any more wrong than another sin!
Thatโs why fasting is so powerful. It is a tool we can use to bring our flesh into subjection, overcome our weaknesses and prove to ourselves that our desires wonโt rule us. Itโs our tool to move those mountains in our lives.
Matthew 17: 20-21
20 So Jesus said to them, โBecause of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, โMove from here to there,โ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. 21 However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting
Use this as post ammunition when someone presents to you the argument, โI was born this way, so it canโt be wrongโ.
Just because itโs natural, doesnโt mean itโs okay.
24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.โ
The traditional ‘nativity scene’ depicting the night that Yeshua the Messiah (Jesus Christ) was born is a favorite Christmas decoration and reenactment.
Of course it features Mary, Joseph, the Baby Jesus, the shepherds, and the Magi or ‘wise men’ from the East.
There’s only one problem…
The Magi or ‘wise men’ were not there that night…not yet.
When you read the account closely, the location that the wise men found Jesus was not a stable, and He was not in a manger. He was no longer an infant, and Joseph was not present when the wise men visited.
Matthew 2:11 (NKJV)
11 And when they had come into the HOUSE, they saw the YOUNG CHILD with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
Luke 2:15-16 (NKJV)
15 So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, โLet us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.โ 16 And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger.
It says very clearly that they arrived at a house, that Jesus was a young child, and His father wasn’t there at the time. At the scene of the birth Jesus is called a Babe, while at the scene with the wise men He is called a small child.
Notice also that the events recorded in Matthew 2:1-12 took place AFTER Yeshua was born. And, one must consider the took some time…
Matthew 2:1-12 (NKJV)
Now AFTER Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, [a]wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, โWhere is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.โ
3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
5 So they said to him, โIn Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet:
6 โBut you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, Are not the least among the rulers of Judah; For out of you shall come a Ruler Who will shepherd My people Israel.โ โ
7 Then Herod, when he had secretly called the [b]wise men, determined from them what time the star appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, โGo and search carefully for the young Child, and when you have found Him, bring back word to me, that I may come and worship Him also.โ
9 When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. 11 And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
12 Then, being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed for their own country another way.
After the LORD was born, the wise men traveled to Jerusalem after seeing the star and inquired of where they could find Jesus…that took some time.
After hearing of this, Herod gathered the chief priests and scribes and asked them where Christ was born…that took some time.
Herod then secretly requested that the wise men come to him. After determining when the star appeared, he asked the wise men to CAREFULLY (take you time) search for the “young child”… that took some time.
After finding the LORD, the wise men didn’t return to Herod, but went straight to their own country, further implying a longer journey…that took some time.
Consider this from my post, “Accepting That Something You’ve Sincerely Believed Is Wrong”…
According to verses 9-10, when they came to where the star stood over where the YOUNG CHILD was (not baby), they came into THE HOUSE (not stable) and found Jesus with His mother (Joseph wasnโt present at the time).
According to verse 12, after being warned in a dream, they departed into their own countryโฆyou canโt do all of that in one nightโs time.
In verses 16 Herod ordered that all male children age 2 and under be killedโฆbecause thatโs when the star first appeared.
After the wise men leave, thatโs when Josephโs name reappears as he takes his family into Egypt.
Some people are so accustomed to believing the wise men were there in the stable, that rather than accept that may not be true and they came later, we start trying to find a way to prove what wish to believe is trueโฆrather than seek the real truth.
The fact is that the shepherds and wise men visited Jesus on two different occasions, possibly separated by about two years.
Many of those who have the traditional nativity scene ingrained in their minds may ask, “What does it matter?”
Again, because God said that anything done to worship Him MUST be done in spirit and not truth. Unfortunately, Christians are notorious for twisting and compromising to fit traditions and their will instead of God’s.
If you’re going to celebrate the Son of God’s birth, do it in SPIRIT AND TRUTH!
How many times have you heard the phrase, “They made a deal with the devil?”
I contend that the devil won’t and hasn’t ‘made a deal’ with anyone and here are the biblical reasons why…
1. THE DEVIL KNOWS GOD WILL ACCEPT OUR REPENTANCE ANYTIME
The devil knows the word of God. That’s what he used to try and tempt Jesus in Matthew 4:1-11.
So, he knows that God is willing to accept our repentance through His Son and our Savior, Yeshua the Messiah (Jesus Christ). Just as the thief on the cross, sincere repentance and accepting His Son as our Savior, no matter how we have lived our lives, will secure our salvation.
Luke 23:39-43 (NKJV)
39 Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, [a]โIf You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.โ 40 But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, โDo you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong.โ 42 Then he said [b]to Jesus, โLord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.โ 43 And Jesus said to him, โAssuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.โ
2. THE DEVIL KNOWS A DEAL WITH GOD SUPERSEDES A DEAL WITH HIM
Because the devil knows that God will accept our sincere repentance, he knows that any ‘deal’ made with him would be immediately ‘voided’. He has only the power that God allows him…temporarily. Remember Job…
Job 1:12 (NKJV)
12 And the Lord said to Satan, โBehold, all that he has is in your [a]power; only do not lay a hand on his person.โ
3. THE DEVIL KNOWS HOW WE ARE
Since the devil knows that God will accept our repentance at any time, and that he only has limited control, he knows it is possible that we could change our mind at anytime. He knows that if we change our mind and ‘default’ on our ‘contract’ with him, that God will support it.
4. HE WILL HAVE NO AUTHORITY IN ‘HELL’ ANYWAY
Besides, the devil will have absolutely no authority in eternal separation from God. He and those who follow him will be in eternal punishment. He is not being rewarded an eternal kingdom of darkness…
Revelation 20:9-11 (CJB)
9 and they came up over the breadth of the Land and surrounded the camp of Godโs people and the city he loves. But fire came down from heaven and consumed them. 10 The Adversary who had deceived them was hurled into the lake of fire and sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet were; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
The devil is not omnipotent, omnipresent and definitely not omniscient. He has only been given authority for a little while. He knows how much God loves us and that making a deal with us would be…foolish. He is many things, but definitely not stupid.
God is a healer and can heal any disease if He chooses. Thatโswhy itโs so important to specifically call out the Hebrew name for God, Yehovah Rapha, The God Who Heals, when praying for your healing, or interceding for someone else. And of course do this in the name of Yeshua the Messiah, Jesus Christ.
But, as much as we know that God can heal, we have to deal with the fact that some people have illnesses for years. And, some never get healed.
Is a chronic illness a blessing? NO.
Is a chronic illness a curse? NOT ALWAYS.
SO, IF A CHRONIC ILLNESS ISNโT A BLESSING AND ISNโT A CURSE, THEN WHAT IS IT?
A CHRONIC ILLNESS IS NOT A CURSE WHEN…
1. WHEN ITโS A โTHORN IN THE FLESHโ
The Apostle Paul had a problem, an issue, a concern that bothered him so much that he prayed and asked God to remove it 3 times. Was it an illness? We donโt know, but we do know that God chose not to remove it, even though Paul was fulfilling his purpose…
2 Corinthians 12:7-10 (NKJV)
7 And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a (A)thorn in the flesh was given to me, (B)a messenger of Satan to [a]buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. 8 (C)Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. 9 And He said to me, โMy grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.โ Therefore most gladly (D)I will rather boast in my infirmities, (E)that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore (F)I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christโs sake. (G)For when I am weak, then I am strong.
If youโre enduring an illness while trusting God, His power is resting on you. When youโre at your weakest, through Him you are strong…itโs not a curse.
2. WHEN ITโS TO REVEAL GODโS GLORY…
Most of us know the account of Jesus healing a man that was born blind in John Chapter 9. When asked whoโs sin โcursedโ the man, Yeshua quickly told them no one sinned, but he was born blind so that God could be later glorified through his healing. Through his healing we have a testimony of Godโs power.
If youโre enduring a hardship and it seems it wonโt go away. Keep the faith. Remember, the man in John Chapter 9 was of age, blind since he was a child. But, when he was healed, there were witnesses and we are talking about it today…itโs not a curse.
John 9:3 (NKJV)
3 Jesus answered, โNeither this man nor his parents sinned, (A)but that the works of God should be revealed in him.
3. AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE IN CHRISTโS SUFFERING…
This isnโt talked about much, but sometimes our suffering is God trusting us with the opportunity to share in the sufferings of our Lord and Savior…
1 Peter 4:13 (NKJV)
13 but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christโs sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.
Philippians 1:29 (NKJV)
29 For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake,
Part of our calling is to endure some suffering for the sake of the name of Jesus. When you think about it, itโs only fair. Whatโs not fair is that some people suffer more than others. But, God never claimed to be fair, only just.
If youโre going through a chronic illness, think about how much our Savior suffered for us…itโs not a curse.
We have all been there. Those moments when you aren’t angry at God. You aren’t angry at God. You aren’t angry at the world…you’re angry at yourself and the sins, bad decisions and mistakes you have made.
Most of the time we feel this way because we’re living out the consequences of those mistakes, or it’s because we are silently noticing how our decisions have had a negative affect on those we love.
Yes, there are things beyond our control. Yes, there are times the world hasn’t been fair to us. And, yes there are times that God could have moved on our behalf and He didn’t.
But when we’re honest with ourselves, much of the difficulty we face in life is a result of our own sins or bad decisions.
When we admit this to ourselves, it can lead to moments or seasons of depression. So, what do you do?
1. REMEMBER THOSE USED BY GOD IN THE BIBLE WERE FAR FROM PERFECT
Remember that everyone in the bible who was used by God was far from perfect. From Abraham, Isaac and Jacob to the patriarchs. From Noah to Moses to David to Peter to Paul. From Sarah to Rebecca to Miriam to Job’s wife…the men and women in the bible made horrible mistakes. However, they were still used by God.
2. YOU DIDN’T CATCH GOD BY SURPRISE WHEN YOU MESSED UP
God was not surprised when he sinned with Bathsheba. God knew that was going to happen when He anointed David king years before. Also know that YOU didn’t catch God by surprise when you messed up. Especially if it’s due to one of the weaknesses that He gave you. Many of our weaknesses are innate. Some people are naturally horrible with managing money. Others have an unquenchable appetite for sex that can only be controlled with the help of God’s Holy Spirit. While other people have a natural tendency to quickly get angry and act before thinking. These are all weakness that we need God’s help to overcome. This is His way of nurturing a relationship to keep us close to Him…but too many times we allow our weaknesses to overpower our strengths. Never forget that His strength is made perfect in our weaknesses…
2 Corinthians 12:8-10 (NKJV)
8ย Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me.ย 9ย And He said to me,ย โMy grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.โย Therefore most gladlyย I will rather boast in my infirmities,ย that the power of Christ may rest upon me.ย 10ย Thereforeย I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christโs sake.ย For when I am weak, then I am strong.
3. GOD MADE YOU AND KNOWS THE CHALLENGES OF LIVING IN ‘FLESH’
God knows that the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak (Matthew 26:41)
He has compassion on us when we are repentant about our ‘human’ moments…
Psalm 103:10-14 (NKJV)
10ย He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor punished us according to our iniquities.
11ย For as the heavens are high above the earth, Soย great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; 12ย As far as the east is from the west, Soย far has Heย removed our transgressions from us. 13ย As a father pitiesย hisย children, Soย theย Lordย pities those who fear Him. 14ย For Heย [a]knows our frame; He remembers that weย areย dust.
4. GOD CAN DELIVER US FROM THE CONSEQUENCES OF OUR SINS, BAD DECISIONS AND WEAKNESSES
God is a keeper ( Yehovah Raah, The Lord is our Shepherd) and is able to sustain us in spite of our mistakes. There are those who have made the same mistakes you have and have lost much more… have suffered much more… and some didn’t even survive. But, He kept you…sustained you… nurtured you… and had mercy on you through your weakest, darkest moments. David remained king after he repented and remained a man after God’s heart. God restored to Job twice as much as he had after he prayed for his friends who made his ordeal much worse (Job 42:10-17). After denying Christ, Peter went on to be one of the most influential Apostles. No matter what you’ve done, if you repent and it’s God’s will, He can deliver you from the consequences of your sins, bad decisions and weaknesses. Especially if it’s an innate weakness He gave you. Make this prayer a part of your regular prayer life:
“Heavenly father, I truly repent of how I have let you down. Please forgive me and if it’s your will deliver me from the consequences of my sins, bad decisions and weakness.”
5. REMEMBER THAT GOD ALLOWS US MOMENTS TO LAMENT AS LONG AS WE STILL PROCLAIM OUR TRUST IN HIM
One of the most beautiful things about the Psalms is that they teach us how to express our regret and even question Him in respect as long as we end those moments reaffirming our trust in Him.
Psalm 13 (NIV)
1ย How long,ย Lord? Will you forget meย forever? ย ย ย ย How long will you hide your faceย from me? 2ย How long must I wrestle with my thoughts ย ย ย ย and day after day have sorrow in my heart? ย ย ย ย How long will my enemy triumph over me?
3ย Look on meย and answer,ย Lordย my God. ย ย ย ย Give light to my eyes,ย or I will sleep in death, 4ย and my enemy will say, โI have overcome him,โ ย ย ย ย and my foes will rejoice when I fall.
5ย But I trust in your unfailing love; ย ย ย ย my heart rejoices in your salvation. 6ย I will singย theย Lordโs praise, ย ย ย ย for he has been good to me.
So, don’t be too hard on yourself wen you’re feeling down and depressed. God made you and He knows you. Just as parents don’t enjoy seeing their children cry when they are truly sorry of their mistakes, God is compassionate. Do just what David did as he lamented the kidnapping of their women and children and bore the blame of those closest to him. Encourage and strengthen yourself in the LORD and keep it moving! Remember, God gave him the victory then too.
1 Samuel 30 (NKJV)
Now it happened, when David and his men came toย Ziklag, on the third day, that theย Amalekites had invaded the South and Ziklag, attacked Ziklag and burned it with fire,ย 2ย and had taken captive theย women and those whoย wereย there, from small to great; they did not kill anyone, but carriedย themย away and went their way.ย 3ย So David and his men came to the city, and there it was, burned with fire; and their wives, their sons, and their daughters had been taken captive.ย 4ย Then David and the people whoย wereย with him lifted up their voices and wept, until they had no more power to weep.ย 5ย And Davidโs twoย wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite, had been taken captive.ย 6ย Now David was greatly distressed, forย the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people wasย [a]grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters.ย But David strengthened himself in theย Lordย his God.
Evil is a reality and absolute just like good (9).
You can’t have good without evil just as you can’t have right without left… (23)
Just like you can’t have up without down. (30)
But, just as up without down changes in outer space. (40)
Good and evil will change when Yeshua the Messiah (Jesus Christ) returns. (51)
God uses both for His purpose in this age (Good to bless — Evil for discipline). (66)
However, God will separate good from evil for eternity when Yeshua the Messiah returns. (80)
Proverbs 16:4 (NKJV)
4 The Lord has made all for Himself, Yes, even the wicked for the day of [a]doom.
Genesis 50:20 (NKJV)
20 But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.
Isaiah 10:5-6 (NKJV)
5 โWoe to Assyria, the rod of My anger And the staff in whose hand is My indignation. 6 I will send him against an ungodly nation, And against the people of My wrath I will give him charge, To seize the spoil, to take the prey, And to tread them down like the mire of the streets.
Matthew 13:24-30 (NKJV)
24 Another parable He put forth to them, saying: โThe kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field; 25 but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way. 26 But when the grain had sprouted and produced a crop, then the tares also appeared. 27 So the servants of the owner came and said to him, โSir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?โ 28 He said to them, โAn enemy has done this.โ The servants said to him, โDo you want us then to go and gather them up?โ 29 But he said, โNo, lest while you gather up the tares you also uproot the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, โFirst gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.โ โ
One of the things about the Old Testament is that it gives us extreme examples of what God loves and what He hates. His extreme judgements explicitly gave us insight into how He feels, reacted as well as spiritual concepts and laws that are still relevant today…
1 Corinthians 10:11 (NKJV)
11ย Nowย [a]all these things happened to them as examples, andย they were written for ourย [b]admonition,ย upon whom the ends of the ages have come.
Romans 15:4 (NKJV)
4ย Forย whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through theย [a]patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.
One of those concepts is generational curses. That’s when God places a curse on an individual that continues to transfer to his or her posterity. Seems pretty unfair huh? But, it’s been that way since the Garden of Eden after Adam and his wife sinned.
When you read Deuteronomy 28 God lists the blessings of obedience and the curses of disobedience. These blessings and curses are generational…
Deuteronomy 28:45-46 (NKJV)
45 โMoreover all these curses shall come upon you and pursue and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you [a]did not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you. 46 And they shall be upon you for a sign and a wonder, and on your DESCENDANTS FOREVER.
Forever is a long time. Seems unfair doesn’t it?
But, there is a reason for this.
Whenever God cursed or punished His people, what was it that always removed the curse, that would have otherwise remained FOREVER?
WHEN THEY REPENTED!
Leviticus 26:40-42 (NKJV)
40 โBut if they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers, with their unfaithfulness in which they were unfaithful to Me, and that they also have walked contrary to Me,
41 and that I also have walked contrary to them and have brought them into the land of their enemies;
if their uncircumcised hearts are humbled, and they accept their guiltโ
42 then I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and My covenant with Isaac and My covenant with Abraham I will remember;
I will remember the land.
1 John 1:9 (NKJV)
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Think about your family and the attitudes, habits, thoughts and behaviors that have gone on for generations. How many of them can STOP with your generation?
If you feel your family is under the generational power of dysfunction, promiscuity, homosexuality, addiction, arrogance, pride, shame, racism, poverty, anger, witchcraft, violence, sickness etc,….
SOME OF THESE CURSES COULD STOP WITH YOUR GENERATION IF YOU CHANGE GENERATIONAL BEHAVIOR IN OTHER AREAS.
As much as parents and grandparents love their children, no one ever does everything RIGHT. God consistently reminded Israel of the ‘sins of their fathers.’
Stop and think about the things that your parents and grandparents did that were not pleasing to God, but may have continued through tradition, bad teaching or simply because ‘that’s the way we do things’.
Be bold enough to change it the way that Hezekiah did not continue in the sins of the kings before him. He TORE DOWN the alters and evil practices of those who came before him…
2 Kings 18:1-5 (NKJV)
18 Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea the son of Elah, king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz, king of Judah, began to reign. 2 He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His motherโs name was Abi[a] the daughter of Zechariah. 3 And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father David had done.
4 He removed the [b]high places and broke the sacred pillars, cut down the [c]wooden image and broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made; for until those days the children of Israel burned incense to it, and called it [d]Nehushtan. 5 He trusted in the Lord God of Israel, so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor who were before him.
What ‘alters’ do you need to tear down in your family?
CONFESS. REPENT. and BREAK THE CURSE.
Now, read Nehemiah Chapter 9 and notice that after they were allowed by God to return from exile, they confessed not only their sins, but the sins of their ancestors. Notice in BOLD print each time the people confessed their sin…
NEHEMIAH 9 (NKJV)
9ย Now on the twenty-fourth day ofย this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, in sackcloth,ย and withย [a]dust on their heads.ย 2ย Thenย those of Israelite lineage separated themselves from all foreigners; and they stood andย confessed their sins and the iniquities of their fathers.ย 3ย And they stood up in their place andย read from the Book of the Law of theย Lordย their Godย for one-fourth of the day; andย for anotherย fourth they confessed and worshiped theย Lordย their God.
4ย Then Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani,ย andย Chenani stood on theย [b]stairs of the Levites and cried out with a loud voice to theย Lordย their God.ย 5ย And the Levites, Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah,ย andย Pethahiah, said:
โStand upย andย bless theย Lordย your God Forever and ever!
โBlessed beย Your glorious name, Which is exalted above all blessing and praise!
Which is exalted above all blessing and praise! 6ย You aloneย areย theย Lord; You have made heaven, The heaven of heavens, withย all their host, The earth and everything on it, The seas and all that is in them, And Youย preserve them all. The host of heaven worships You.
7ย โYouย areย theย Lordย God, Who choseย Abram, And brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans, And gave him the nameย Abraham; 8ย You found his heartย faithful before You, And made aย covenant with him To give the land of the Canaanites, The Hittites, the Amorites, The Perizzites, the Jebusites, And the Girgashitesโ To giveย itย to his descendants. Youย have performed Your words, For Youย areย righteous.
โYouย saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, Andย heard their cry by the Red Sea. 10ย Youย showed signs and wonders against Pharaoh, Against all his servants, And against all the people of his land. For You knew that theyย actedย [c]proudly against them. So Youย made a name for Yourself, asย it isย this day. 11ย And You divided the sea before them, So that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; And their persecutors You threw into the deep, As a stone into the mighty waters. 12ย Moreover Youย led them by day with a cloudy pillar, And by night with a pillar of fire, To give them light on the road Which they should travel.
13 โYou came down also on Mount Sinai, And spoke with them from heaven, And gave them just ordinances and true laws, Good statutes and commandments. 14 You made known to them Your holy Sabbath, And commanded them precepts, statutes and laws, By the hand of Moses Your servant. 15 You gave them bread from heaven for their hunger, And brought them water out of the rock for their thirst, And told them to go in to possess the land Which You had [d]sworn to give them.
โButย they and our fathers actedย [e]proudly, Hardened[f]ย their necks, And did not heed Your commandments. 17ย They refused to obey, Andย they were not mindful of Your wonders That You did among them. But they hardened their necks, Andย [g]in their rebellion They appointedย a leader To return to their bondage. But Youย areย God, Ready to pardon, Gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, Abundant in kindness, And did not forsake them.
18ย โEvenย when they made a molded calf for themselves, And said, โThisย isย your god That brought you up out of Egypt,โ And worked great provocations, 19ย Yet in Yourย manifold mercies You did not forsake them in the wilderness. Theย pillar of the cloud did not depart from them by day, To lead them on the road; Nor the pillar of fire by night, To show them light, And the way they should go.
You also gave Yourย good Spirit to instruct them, And did not withhold Yourย manna from their mouth, And gave themย water for their thirst. 21ย Forty years You sustained them in the wilderness; They lacked nothing; Theirย clothes did not wear out And their feet did not swell.
22ย โMoreover You gave them kingdoms and nations, And divided them intoย [h]districts. So they took possession of the land ofย Sihon, [i]The land of the king of Heshbon, And the land of Og king of Bashan. 23ย You also multipliedย their children as the stars of heaven, And brought them into the land Which You had told their fathers To go in and possess. 24ย Soย theย [j]people went in And possessed the land; You subdued before them the inhabitants of the land, The Canaanites, And gave them into their hands, With their kings And the people of the land, That they might do with them as they wished.
And they took strong cities and aย rich land, And possessedย houses full of all goods, Cisternsย alreadyย dug, vineyards, olive groves, Andย [k]fruit trees in abundance. So they ate and were filled andย grew fat, And delighted themselves in Your greatย goodness.
26ย โNevertheless theyย were disobedient And rebelled against You, Cast Your law behind their backs And killed Yourย prophets, whoย [l]testified against them To turn them to Yourself; And they worked great provocations. 27ย Therefore You delivered them into the hand of their enemies, Who oppressed them; And in the time of their trouble, When they cried to You, Youย heard from heaven; And according to Your abundant mercies You gave them deliverers who saved them From the hand of their enemies.
โBut after they had rest, They again did evil before You. Therefore You left them in the hand of their enemies, So that they had dominion over them; Yet when they returned and cried out to You, You heard from heaven; Andย many times You delivered them according to Your mercies, 29ย Andย [m]testified against them, That You might bring them back to Your law. Yet they actedย [n]proudly, And did not heed Your commandments, But sinned against Your judgments, โWhich if a man does, he shall live by them.โ And they shrugged their shoulders, [o]Stiffened their necks, And would not hear. 30ย Yet for many years You had patience with them, Andย [p]testifiedย against them by Your Spiritย in Your prophets. Yet they would not listen; Therefore You gave them into the hand of the peoples of the lands. 31ย Nevertheless in Your great mercy You did not utterly consume them nor forsake them; For Youย areย God, gracious and merciful.
โNow therefore, our God, The great, theย mighty, and awesome God, Who keeps covenant and mercy: Do not let all theย [q]trouble seem small before You That has come upon us, Our kings and our princes, Our priests and our prophets, Our fathers and on all Your people, From the days of the kings of Assyria until this day. 33ย Howeverย Youย areย just in all that has befallen us; For You have dealt faithfully, Butย we have done wickedly. 34ย Neither our kings nor our princes, Our priests nor our fathers, Have kept Your law, Nor heeded Your commandments and Your testimonies, With which You testified against them. 35ย For they haveย not served You in their kingdom, Or in the many goodย thingsย that You gave them, Or in the large and rich land which You set before them; Nor did they turn from their wicked works.
โHereย weย are,ย servants today! And the land that You gave to our fathers, To eat its fruit and its bounty, Here weย are,ย servants in it! 37ย Andย it yields much increase to the kings You have set over us, Because of our sins; Also they haveย dominion over our bodies and our cattle At their pleasure; And weย areย in great distress.
38ย โAnd because of all this, Weย make a sureย covenantย and writeย it; Our leaders, our Levites,ย andย our priestsย sealย it.โ
Now notice what God says to Israel in Leviticus Chapter 40 after giving them consequences of being disobedient…
Leviticus 26:40-45 (NKJV)
40 โBut if they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers, with their unfaithfulness in which they were unfaithful to Me, and that they also have walked contrary to Me,
41 and that I also have walked contrary to them and have brought them into the land of their enemies;
if their uncircumcised hearts are humbled, and they accept their guiltโ
42 then I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and My covenant with Isaac and My covenant with Abraham I will remember;
I will remember the land.
43 The land also shall be left empty by them, and will enjoy its sabbaths while it lies desolate without them;
they will accept their guilt, because they despised My judgments andbecause their soul abhorred My statutes.
44 Yet for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not cast them away, nor shall I abhor them, to utterly destroy them and break My covenant with them;
for I am the Lord their God.
45 But for their sake I will remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God:
I am the Lord.โ โ
What ‘sins of your fathers and mothers’ are you allowing to continue in another generation? What sins have you not rejected?
I wrote the lyrics to this song back in 2001. It is my attempt at a song to give God sincere worship and praise either in worship or while you’re alone.
After recording three projects, my wife and I haven’t been able to get back into the studio. But as I stated in the video above, should one let the financial or industry challenges prevent him or her from sharing what God gave them to share with the world…with generations?
Does God intend for us to ‘find a way’ to share what He has given us rather than wait for years until circumstances allow it to be done the traditional way.
So, here I am sharing a snippet of a song He gave me almost twenty years ago.
I hope the lyrics bless your efforts to worship God…
This piece is not necessarily critical of fraternal organizations, but addresses a question in an age of removing vestiges of white supremacy and racism from American institutions.
The question it addresses is valid whether you agree or disagree with the removal of monuments, statues and aspects of a time in American when open exclusion, subjugation and racism was accepted.
Black fraternities and sororities are an integral part of Black culture.
Most began in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s following the models of White fraternities and sororities that excluded Black members.
Membership in these organizations has become a tradition and expectation in many families.
They are responsible for much great work in the community.
But here’s the question. In an age of the removal of statues and monuments erected in a time when America had a different mindset, why aren’t the Greek letters that distinguish these organizations considered to be a reminder of the system that excluded Blacks from membership? Why are they excluded from the conversation?
How many African languages are there that offer options of letters that could be used to not only distinguish these organizations, but also celebrate African heritage?
Or, why use letters at all?
Black members of these organizations say, “I’m Greek.” How many people of other cultures proclaim, “I’m an African”?
Greece is a part of the European continent. Members of these organizations refer to themselves by saying, “I’m a Greek.” Even though both religion and science agree that life began in Africa…how many people of other continents proclaim, “I’m an African”. How many people are more passionate about their affiliation than their faith in God.
God introduced Himself to Moses as ‘I AM’, so we must be careful what we say behind our “I AM”.
Exodus 3:14 (NKJV)
14 And God said to Moses, โI AM WHO I AM.โ And He said, โThus you shall say to the children of Israel, โI AM has sent me to you.โ โ
There is no condemnation for using Greek letters and culture…just wondering why members of Black fraternities and sororities who are passionate about removing aspects of racism are excluding Greek letters and culture ( language and letters are a part of culture) from the conversation and movement.
Am I an expert on secret societies and their history in America? No.
But, that doesn’t reduce the legitimacy of the question.
Should there be consequence for when reasonable expectations aren’t met on the job? Yes, of course!
But, in our current culture it’s become all to common for a boss to ‘chew out’ and employee who isn’t meeting those expectations…who makes a mistake…who needs correction.
No matter where someone sits on the hierarchy of organizational structure, the fact is that workers are all just people doing a job to take care of their families or themselves…to make a living.
It’s true some jobs are much more impactful on society if someone messes up, for example if someone is setting up an operating room for emergency surgery, but the fact still remains that all workers are equal citizens doing a job.
But think about this. Outside the workplace, your boss is just another person. He or she is someone else’s wife, husband, son, daughter, father, mother…just a person. They have absolutely NO authority over your life outside of your commitment to the company or organization.
Because we are all just equal citizens trying to make a living, no one has the right to overly assertively reprimand another adult at work. Offices, factories, schools and churches are not the military.
No one has the right to belittle you… insult you… embarrass you… or even threaten you because they think that’s leadership. This usually happens when the correction is affected by emotions.
Every organization has consequences in place for when expectations aren’t met.
Verbally warn me with respect!
Write me up!
Demote me!
Fire me!
But no one has the right to belittle, insult, embarrass, threaten or treat another adult like a child, even if they have organizational authority over them.
Real leadership isn’t achieved through fear, intimidation, or adult bullying.
When a person is hired, make sure that the progression of consequences are clear, and proceed through them with respect.
No one wants to be disrespected, not even when they mess up.
Matthew 7:12 (NKJV)
12ย Therefore,ย whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, forย this is the Law and the Prophets.
My wife and I have enjoyed watching Tyler Perry share his creative genius with the world since his plays were distributed ‘underground’ in barbershops and beauty salons.
Since then, he has become a powerhouse in the entertainment industry releasing plays, movies, television series and building the careers and fortunes of others.
I don’t know Mr. Perry, but I have a few sincere, non-confrontational and non-judgmental questions for him. We are all learning and growing in our walk with our Lord and Savior Yeshua the Messiah, Jesus Christ.
Mr. Perry, you began your career with very inspiring stage plays that were injected with life lessons, Godly wisdom and biblical references. In fact, they were known for those attributes and many times they were the main reasons people watched them.
THEREโS BEEN A โDRAMATICโ SHIFT!
But now, your movies and television series are laden with profanity (much more than just ‘damn and hell’), both heterosexual and homosexual sex scenes, and nudity.
Here are my questions:
As a man of God (and I believe you are sincere), how do you justify this huge shift in your work? I know that even the bible is filled with ‘adult’ themes, but our challenge as disciples is how to relay those messages and themes without compromising the integrity of our Godly character. For example, preachers shouldn’t use profanity to get across a message or use nudity in a visual aid. Has your work transitioned from inspiration to titillation?
If a writer or director instructs actors to use profanity, act in a love scene or be nude, aren’t they provoking them to sin to do their job?
Scene from episode of โRUTHLESSโ…๐๐พ๐๐พ๐๐พ
When you instruct an actor or actress to curse drop ‘F’-Bombs, and use ‘unclean language’ are you becoming a stumbling block?
Matthew 18:6 (NKJV)
6 โBut whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea…”
If you are directing two unmarried actors to kiss, grope and simulate sex with one another are you asking them to commit fornication?
If you are responsible for asking a married actor or actress to do an intense love scene, are you asking them to commit adultery?
If you are responsible for asking two actors to act out a homosexual scene, are you asking them to commit sin?
When you begin producing the same kind of movies and television shows as ‘the world’, are you conforming whether than providing a Godly example?
When what we watch and when what the actors do is a product or fruit of your creativity, doesn’t all accountability to God fall back on you?
Mr. Perry, you have been given a platform and influence to shape and establish culture. You are in a position to strengthen or weaken believers. You have been given the power to confirm to many what is acceptable because they know and respect you as a believer… ‘Well if Tyler Perry does it, then it must be okay’.
Again, Mr. Perry these questions aren’t meant to be mean-spirited or judgmental, but some of your work has definitely evolved into, when measured against the word of God, what could be considered ungodly.
If you ever see this please respond in the comments or in the blog ‘CONTACT tab. You may show me a perspective that I have haven’t considered.
We are here to hold one another accountable, because it’s not about whether we ourselves are ‘right’ or ‘wrong’, but whether we are in harmony with the word, truth, love and perfect will of our God.
Education in America has changed tremendously through the years.
Of course there have been many improvements however, the overall culture, and level of respect for the profession has devolved from the perspective of one 20-year veteran teacher.
Even though her perspective is anecdotal rather than empirical , it’s not exclusive and can’t be ignored.
One of the greatest laments of her career is how she feels she was ‘expected to neglect’ her own children for her students. And, her lament doesn’tdiminish her dedication or discipline passion for her students.
This expectation in education isn’t explicitly stated, but inferred through the work load and expectations.
Many of the expectations states and school boards set for administrators and teachers are unrealistic. It is impossible to meet an ever-growing list of tasks and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
Of course, many people feel the expectations are justified because of summer vacation.
America must step back and examine the accepted culture and levels of toxicity in its education system…
The workload…
The legal responsibilities…
The unrealistic expectations…
And of course, the compensation…
When referencing the workload and expectations, many educators say, “It’s a lot” as if they’re afraid to say ‘ “It’s too much!”.
Freedom of speech to express their legitimate concerns is forfeited for fear of retribution. The fact that some teachers would be afraid to share this article is an example of the problem.
One teacher expressed that her district treats the teachers like children or chattel.
Many enter the profession enter it with the will to do it, only to have their will broken just like Ethan Hawk’s character in the movie “Training Day”…bearing the blame for not being dedicated enough.
Doing what’s best for students should never mean doing what’s not best for a teacher’s own children.
So many people love the cozy idea of sitting by a warm fire, and sipping egg nog or hot chocolate as they unwrap gifts with family or friends.
So many people get excited when they hear the weather forecaster announce snow is coming.
But, while some people rush the grocery stores for extra food in case they are snowed in…
While some people prepare to cook hot meals and watch the snow fall…
While so many children get excited over the thought of a snow day…
While some say, “Hmmm, what will we eat?”…
Others cringe at the thought of snow coming…
Others wait to see what the grocery stores will throw away…
Others wonder what cooked meals they can find in a dumpster…
Others wonder how they will keep their children warm on a snow day…
Others say, “what will we eat?”…wondering IF? rather than WHAT?!
As we enjoy the blessings of warmth, food and shelter during the Holiday season, let us not forget those who have no place to lay their heads…no place for their children.
Let us remember those who have to struggle looking for someplace to use the bathroom with dignity after a night of sleeping on the street.
Beyond the holiday season, remember your WINTER FUN is someone’s WINTER FEAR.
And, take advantage of the opportunities that God gives you to be a blessing to someone in need. It’s good to PRAY for them, but it’s even better to be the answer to your own prayer for them.
1 John 3:17 (NKJV)
17 But whoever has this worldโs goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?
11 For the grace(A) of God has appeared(B) that offers salvation to all people.(C)12 It teaches us to say โNoโ to ungodliness and worldly passions,(D)and to live self-controlled,(E) upright and godly lives(F) in this present age,
“I’m only human!”
“I’m just a man!”
“I have needs!”
“God made me this way!”
These are some phrases we can find ourselves using to comfort ourselves or to explain to someone else when we have given in to sins of the flesh…especially sexual sin…
Fornication…
Adultery…
Homosexuality…
Pornography…
The bible reminds us that the ‘flesh’ wars against the ‘spirit’ and ‘spirit against the ‘flesh’. It’s a battle, therefore God knows that it’s not easy…
Galatians 5:16-18 (NKJV)
16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
Matthew 26:41 (NKJV)
41 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.โ
God designed our bodies (flesh) to have sexual desire to be enjoyed within the boundaries of Godly marriage between a man and woman.
These desires are produced and regulated by our glands and our brain.
Testicles…
Ovaries…
When we allow how we react to the hormones these glands release into our bodies to control us, we are allowing our glands to become our god.
“I just can’t help myself!”
“I just can’t say no!”
“I just can’t stay away!”
There are some people who spend most of their time and energy thinking about sex. Even within a marriage, being obsessed with sex can be unhealthy and destructive.
The fact is that much of our society is obsessed with sex. It’s in television, social media, movies, music, art, literature…SEX SALES!
So, whether married or unmarried, we must control our sexual desires and not let them rule us. Because when something rules you, it becomes a priority, and it’s easy for what we prioritize to become our idols….our gods.
That’s why the apostle Paul asserts that he brought his flesh under subjection…
1 Corinthians 9:27 (NKJV)
27 But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.
Remember, lack of discipline over his flesh is what allowed Esau to give up his birthright and blessing. He surrendered it to his brother for a single meal (Genesis 25:29-34).
That’s why the exercise of fasting is so important. It’s bringing our bodies under subjection so that what our bodies ‘want’ and our cravings won’t rule us…we rule them.
Sometimes telling God YES is telling our bodies NO!
Donโt let your glands become your God!
Titus 3:3-8 (MSG)
3-8 It wasnโt so long ago that we ourselves were stupid and stubborn, dupes of sin, ordered every which way by our glands, going around with a chip on our shoulder, hated and hating back. But when God, our kind and loving Savior God, stepped in, he saved us from all that. It was all his doing; we had nothing to do with it. He gave us a good bath, and we came out of it new people, washed inside and out by the Holy Spirit. Our Savior Jesus poured out new life so generously. Godโs gift has restored our relationship with him and given us back our lives. And thereโs more life to comeโan eternity of life! You can count on this.
The Covid-19 pandemic has made the term ‘Essential Worker’ and every day term. I found this definition after a quick ‘Google’ search: “According to the U..S Department of Homeland Security,ย essential workersย are those who conduct a range of operations and services that are typicallyย essentialย to continue critical infrastructure operations.
It’s easy to see how those on the front lines of medicine, science, logistics, energy, agriculture, first responders and technology are considered ‘essential’. But, many people raised their eyebrows and the world shut down that liquor stores remained open while churches were closed. Hmmmmm.
Then there are overlooked the ‘essential’ workers such as sanitation professionals. As many celebrated medical, retail, logistics, and other workers many people failed to mention the sanitation workers that make sure our society is free of the filth that allowed the Black Plague to ravage Europe.
But, what about entertainers? Should they be considered essential workers? As Americans and people around the world spent time at home, we consumed the ‘inventory’ of entertainment and creativity on video and streaming platforms. People had countless hours that they passed by enjoying the talents, and creativity of those whose career is to entertain us.
From movies to music to poetry to literature to sports…how much do the essential workers on the front lines of the battle against Covid-19 rely on entertainers to unwind, relax and recharge their batteries before they go back into battle. How much does enjoying our favorite entertainers help us to ‘release the pressures’ of the extreme challenges in these trying times?
What if restrictions restrained actors, singers, artists, musicians, comedians, athletes…those who entertain us from creating new work? How long would that being to show an effect on our society?
Think about the fact that God gave people these gifts of creativity for a reason. There is a time and a place for everything under the sun…
Ecclesiastes 3:1-4 (NKJV)
To everythingย there isย a season, Aย time for every purpose under heaven:
2ย A timeย [a]to be born, Andย a time to die; A time to plant, And a time to pluckย what isย planted; 3ย A time to kill, And a time to heal; A time to break down, And a time to build up; 4ย A time toย weep, And a time to laugh; A time to mourn, And a time to dance;
How ‘essential’ is being entertained to your life? What have you enjoyed since the pandemic started? What would your life be like without it?
Pray is such as special gift from the God of our creation.
We may not have instant and direct access to the President, the governor, the mayor, the CEO, the Athletic Director, your pastor or even one another sometimes…
But, we always have direct access to God through our Lord and Savior Yeshua the Messiah (Jesus Christ).
the Bible teaches us through prayers and supplications to make our requests made known to God…
Philippians 4:6 (NKJV)
6ย Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, withย thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;
There have been times that after I have finished praying, I have wondered…did I miss something?
I thanked God.
I asked for forgiveness of my sins.
I prayed for provision, protection and other things.
I prayed for others…
Did I forget something?
But, then I remembered that we are created in the image of God. That means that we can have His character…His essence.
We can love like Him. We can nurture like Him. We can take care of our children the way He takes care of His children.
So, our children don’t have to make a point to specifically ask every day for us to:
Feed them…
Protect them…
Provide the things they need.
The fact is that many times if they simply come to us, unsolicited…
If they approach us ‘out of the blue’ and with obvious sincerity expressing, I LOVE YOU…and we know that it’s real.
That sincere and unselfish expression of love provokes us to WANT to do something to show them how much we love them. Sometimes it makes us want to do something special for them.
I think we have that reaction because we are created in God’s image. Maybe He sometimes reacts the same way towards us when we bow heads prayer or lift our hands in praise and unselfishly, sincerely express I LOVE YOU! I TRUST YOU! I BLESS YOU! And, I JUST WANT YOU TO BE PLEASED WITH ME!
Remember, prayer isn’t only giving God a laundry list of our needs, but an opportunity to express our love for Him.
Every now and then, just thank God and tell Him that you love Him.
Psalm 103:1-2 (NKJV)
Blessย theย Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me,ย blessย His holy name! 2ย Bless theย Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits:
Let me preface this piece by saying this piece is not addressing dangerous, abusive relationships.
We all encounter people who ‘get on our nerves’. We all have people in our families, workplaces, and even churches who love to cause trouble, drama and who cause us high levels of stress and anxiety.
Some people have a chronic propensity to bring negativity to every interaction.
One of the most common and seemingly practical pieces of advice is to remove the people toxic people from our lives…but does the Bible support that teaching?
It sounds good in blog posts, self help books, sermons, and motivational speeches, but how does God expect us to handle the situation?
Notice that God told Ezekiel that He was sending Him to…well a nation of ‘toxic people’.
Ezekiel 2:3-5 (NKJV)
3 And He said to me: โSon of man, I am sending you to the children of Israel, to a rebellious nation that has rebelled against Me; they and their fathers have transgressed against Me to this very day. 4 For they are[a]impudent and stubborn children. I am sending you to them, and you shall say to them, โThus says the Lord God.โ 5 As for them, whether they hear or whether they refuseโfor they are a rebellious houseโyet they will know that a prophet has been among them.
God equipped Ezekiel for the challenge, and He is trying to equip us…
Ezekiel 3:7-9 (NKJV)
7 But the house of Israel will not listen to you, because they will not listen to Me; for all the house of Israel are[a]impudent and hard-hearted. 8 Behold, I have made your face strong against their faces, and your forehead strong against their foreheads. 9 Like adamant stone, harder than flint, I have made your forehead; do not be afraid of them, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they are a rebellious house.
Yeshua the Messiah, Jesus Christ, sent His disciples into ‘toxic situations’…
Matthew 10:16 (NKJV)
16 โBehold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless[a] as doves.
The fact is that Jesus gave us instructions for how to handle people who intentionally antagonize us…
Matthew 5:44 (NKJV)
44 [a]But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,
Notice that the Lord didn’t say avoid your enemies, block those who curse you, and remove those who spitefully use and persecute you from your life.
God expects us to strong enough to be light, and a positive spiritual influence to those who are ‘toxic’. The very person or persons that you have decided to eliminate from you life might have been specifically sent into your life to benefit from your light.
Let’s say you’re one of those people on social media who announce they are unfriending or blocking the ‘negative or messy’ people from their lives. These are people who haven’t unfriended or blocked you from their lives, even though they may be sometimes annoyed by your passion or love for God. You may be the only light they see in a sea of the craziness on social media.
God expects us to be strong and grow in wisdom, knowledge, understanding, love, joy, peace, goodness, kindness, gentleness, self-control and faithfulness enough so we can represent His glory and image in every relationship and interaction.
This is when what God told us through the apostle Paul is the most powerful…
Philippians 4:13 (NKJV)
13ย I can do all thingsย throughย [a]Christ who strengthens me.
Before you get rid of someone toxic, why not pray for the strength, wisdom and patience to be a blessing to them?
What if Jesus had decided to reject the negative people in His earthly ministry?
Before you block their calls, what if blocked yours?
One of the most encouraging promises in the Bible was given to us by God through the Apostle Paul…
Galatians 6:9 (NKJV)
9ย Andย let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reapย if we do not lose heart.
However, we must recognize our responsibility in receiving this promise from God.
As some people may want to sit back and wait for God to ‘bless’ them, many if not most of the time, God gives us some work and responsibility in receiving many of the blessing in which we hope He will release into our lives.
Remember the man who was born blind?
John 9:6-7 (NKJV)
6ย When He had said these things,ย He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay.ย 7ย And He said to him,ย โGo, washย in the pool of Siloamโย (which is translated, Sent). Soย he went and washed, and came back seeing.
That’s kinda nasty, isn’t it?
But, this man’s blessing was contingent on Him being obedient to Yeshua the Messiah. He had to do something that many people today would have refused to do.
Jesus, spat on the ground…
Made mud from His spit…
Spread it over the blind man’s eyes…
Then, the man had to go and wash it off in a particular pool, not just where he chose to wash it off.
This man had work to DO when his DUE season had arrived.
Some people simply had to touch the hem of the LORD’S garment, and others had to do something unconventional, but they ALL had to DO something.
This is why God teaches us that ‘faith without works is dead’…
James 2:18-24 (NKJV)
18ย But someone will say, โYou have faith, and I have works.โย Show me your faith withoutย [a]your works,ย and I will show you my faith byย [b]my works.ย 19ย You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believeโand tremble!ย 20ย But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works isย [c]dead?ย 21ย Was not Abraham our father justified by worksย when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?ย 22ย Do you seeย that faith was working together with his works, and byย works faith was madeย [d]perfect?ย 23ย And the Scripture was fulfilled which says,ย โAbraham believed God, and it wasย [e]accounted to him for righteousness.โย And he was calledย the friend of God.ย 24ย You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.
If you’re trusting God to move in your life.
If you’re waiting on God to answer your prayers, what are you doing while you’re waiting?
What is God expecting you to do to participate in your breakthrough?
We’ve all heard the old cliche that ‘size matters’.
Even after over 33 years of marriage, some things never change.
I hope the video above makes you smile as my wife and I explain how size matters no longer how long you’ve been married!
I promise it’s clean.
Proverbs 5:18-19 (NKJV)
18 Let your fountain be blessed, And rejoice with (A)the wife of your youth. 19 (B)As a loving deer and a graceful doe, Let her breasts satisfy you at all times; And always be [a]enraptured with her love.
One of the things that reminds me that our bodies and our flesh are temporary is when we stink. As good as you may smell right now, think of the effort we as humans have to put into avoiding smelling bad.
We have to bathe regularlyโฆ
Brush and floss our teethโฆ
Shampoo our hairโฆ
Apply deodorants…
Perfumesโฆ
Colognesโฆ
We as humans have to work at smelling good. Whether we admit it or not, we all smell bad sometimes.
Sometimes if we have been working hardโฆbeen sickโฆor whatever, we can begin to smell unpleasantโฆYOU STINK.
Have you ever been in need of โfreshening upโ and were actually able to smell yourself?
You may have raised up your arm, caught a whiff of your own breathโฆor whatever and said to yourself , โWow! I stink!
Whatโs interesting is that if you donโt get an opportunity to bathe soon, you wonโt notice the odor anymoreโฆyouโve gotten used to your own stench.
BUT, even though you CANโT smell it, everyone else still CAN.
Our sin STINKS to God.
Isaiah 65:5 (NLT)
5ย Yet they say to each other, ย ย ย ย โDonโt come too close or you will defile me! ย ย ย ย I am holier than you!โ These people are a stench in my nostrils, ย ย ย ย an acrid smell that never goes away.
Just as we all have to work to avoid smelling bad, we have to all work to avoid sinning.
Just as our bodies can smell bad, our spirits โsmell badโ when they are consumed with the works of the flesh, or sinโฆ
Galatians 5:19-21 (NKJV)
ย 19ย Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery,ย fornication, uncleanness, lewdness,ย 20ย idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies,ย 21ย envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also toldย youย in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
If we arenโt careful, we can become complacent in sinโฆbad habitsโฆbad attitudesโฆinappropriate lifestylesโฆbehavior thatโs displeasing to God.
We can become complacent and comfortable to the point that we begin excusing, justifying or ignoring where we are wrongโฆ
WE CANโT SMELL OURSELVES STINK ANYMOREโฆ
But others can still smell usโฆ
AND, God can still smell us!
Have you ever gotten caught up in sin to the point that you began toโฆ
Accept it?
Become comfortable in it?
Tell yourself, โIt doesnโt matter anymoreโ?
Feel you couldnโt come back from it?
Say to yourself, โWhy try to do better?
YOU COULDN’T SMELL YOURSELF STINK ANYMORE!
The bible tells us to cleanse ourselves of what defiles our body and spiritโฆ
2 Corinthians 7:1 (NKJV)
Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
1 John 1:9 (NKJV)
9ย If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive usย ourย sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
2 Corinthians 7:10 (NKJV)
10ย For godly sorrow produces repentanceย leadingย to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.
ย We have to recognize what IS sinโฆby reading Godโs word from His perspective.
We have to acknowledge our sinโฆadmit to ourselves that we are hurting God.
We have to regret our sinโฆif we are still proud of what weโve done there is no forgiveness.
We have to repent of our sinโฆwe have to โturn aroundโ and not put ourselves in situations to be tempted by our weaknesses.
Even though sin stinks to God, He has made it clear to us what makes us โsmell goodโ to Him.
Accepting His Son
2 Corinthians 2:15 (NKJV)
ย For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.
ย Wash yourself in the Word of God
ย Ephesians 5:25-26
ย 25ย Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,ย 26ย that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word,
Walk in Loveย (Read 1 Corinthians Chapter 13 to learn how love behaves)
Ephesians 5:2 (NKJV)
ย And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.
Practice the Fruit of the Spiritย
ย Galatians 5:22-23 (NKJV)
22ย But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,ย 23ย gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
ย Rememberโฆwe have to work to avoid smelling badโฆEVERY DAY!
Put effort into making sure your spirit smells good to GodโฆEVERY DAY!
Don’t get to the point that you can’t smell yourself stink anymore.
This is word of admonition to those who call themselves to be believers.
The image of modern-day Christianity has been perverted by people who where pride as a necklace and their arrogance masquerades itself as confidence. Many of these people mean well, but they have been seduced by their passion against some obvious sins (namely abortion and homosexuality)…
1 Timothy 5:24-25 (NLT)
24 Remember, the sins of some people are obvious, leading them to certain judgment. But there are others whose sins will not be revealed until later. 25 In the same way, the good deeds of some people are obvious. And the good deeds done in secret will someday come to light.
…to excuse, justify and even indulge in the sins that aren’t as obvious or politicized such as pride, arrogance. They don’t share their faith in love. They are accused of hating those whose lifestyles they reject, while they themselves accuse others of hating the proud and arrogant personalities they support.
God used proud and arrogant nations ( namely Assyria and Babylon) to punish His people because of their idolatry, hypocrisy, assimilation, refusal of justice, violence and their arrogant leaders.
However, after using these clearly ungodly nations and ungodly rulers to punish His people, He later harshly punished Assyria and Babylon. Go back and read Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel through this context.
The problem with many people in America who call themselves Christians is that they never see America as Assyria or Babylon…only as either persecuted or victorious Israel.
God has made a promise to those who have succumbed to pride and arrogance…
Jeremiah 50:31-32 (NASB)
31 โBehold, I am against you, [a]arrogant one,โ Declares the Lord [b]God of armies, โFor your day has come, The time [c]when I will punish you. 32 The [d]arrogant one will stumble and fall With no one to raise him up; And I will set fire to his cities, And it will devour all his surroundings.โ
Jeremiah 50:31-32 (NKJV)
31 โBehold, I am against you, O most haughty one!โ says the Lord God of hosts; โFor your day has come, [a]The time that I will punish you. 32 The most proud shall stumble and fall, And no one will raise him up; I will kindle a fire in his cities, And it will devour all around him.โ
You can’t fight against one sin by accepting and engaging in another.
Remember, pride is the first mentioned among the seven deadly sins because it is the parent sin to countless offspring sins.
Proverbs 16:18 (NKJV)
18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before [a]a fall.
James 4:6 (NKJV)
6 But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: โGod resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.โ
Many of those who call themselves evangelicals do not represent the true image of Christ any more than the Scribes and Pharisees them. The fact is that Yeshua the Messiah, Jesus Christ warned to beware of their hypocrisy and teaching…
Luke 12:1 (NKJV)
In the meantime, when an innumerable multitude of people had gathered together, so that they trampled one another, He began to say to His disciples first of all, โBeware of the [a]leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
Remember that the LORD’S scathing rebukes WERE NOT FOR THE ‘SINNERS’ but those who called themselves to be religious leaders!
Think about Jesus’ response when the woman was caught in adultery. Think about how He dined with ‘sinners’. Then think about His responses to those who called themselves to be ‘religious’…
Matthew 23:13-36 (NKJV)
13 โBut woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in. 14 [a]Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widowsโ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.
15 โWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of [b]hell as yourselves.
16 โWoe to you, blind guides, who say, โWhoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obliged to perform it.โ 17 Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that [c]sanctifies the gold? 18 And, โWhoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obliged to perform it.โ 19 Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift? 20 Therefore he who [d]swears by the altar, swears by it and by all things on it. 21 He who swears by the temple, swears by it and by Him who [e]dwells in it. 22 And he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by Him who sits on it.
23 โWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. 24 Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!
25 โWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and [f]self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also.
27 โWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead menโs bones and all uncleanness. 28 Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
29 โWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you build the tombs of the prophets and [g]adorn the monuments of the righteous, 30 and say, โIf we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.โ
31 โTherefore you are witnesses against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathersโ guilt.33 Serpents, brood[h] of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell? 34 Therefore, indeed, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes: some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city, 35 that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36 Assuredly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.
Enjoy this beautiful memory of my wife, Mechelle Johnson sharing a soulful memory of music on Beale Street in Memphis TN…
It’s original Gospel Jazz, “Walk with Me (Never Alone),” and a beautiful classic love song cover of Rene and Angela’s “Your Smile”.
Remember, “You minister to the soul with a Gospel song, but you minister to a marriage with a love song.”
&
“Life without music would be all talk.”
Jeremiah 31:3-4 (NKJV)
3 The Lord has appeared [a]of old to me, saying: โYes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you. 4 Again I will build you, and you shall be rebuilt, O virgin of Israel! You shall again be adorned with your tambourines, And shall go forth in the dances of those who rejoice.
You wake up, reach over and kiss your spouse. You then you turn on the television to check the weather and traffic. You go into the kitchen and grab a bite to eat and promptly brush, floss and take a shower so you can get out the door and be on time for work.
What’s wrong with this morning scenario?
You acknowledged your spouse…
You acknowledged the weather…
You acknowledged the traffic…
You acknowledged your hunger…
You acknowledged your hygiene (even your ‘low’giene:-)…
You acknowledged your job…
But did you acknowledge the One who made everything else you acknowledged possible?
Did you acknowledge God? Did you tell Him good morning? Did you tell Him thanks for protecting you and your family, while you were unconscious all night? Did you thank Him for waking you up? Did you thank Him for brand new mercies..
Lamentations 3:22-23 (NKJV)
22 Through the Lordโs mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.
This world is far too dangerous. Too unpredictable… Too evil for us to begin our day without acknowledging the God of our salvation.
Too many people say they are believers, but when they are honest with themselves, they live as if God isn’t even there.
We acknowledge, relate to and take seriously what is real to us.
I believe that beginning the day without acknowledging God first thing each and every morning is the ultimate ‘intentional’ act of arrogance and pride.
We are saying, (without saying )… “I’ve got this.” “I don’t need your protection.” “I don’t need your provision.” “I don’t need your guidance.” “I don’t need your wisdom.” “I don’t need your help.”
In as sense we are saying, “I don’t need you today!”
When you love someone…when you’re in love someone, you act like it. In fact, not only do we expect the love we give be reciprocated, we demand it of one another.
We prove how real God is to us, and how much we love Him by how we relate to Him. How we talk to Him. How we fellowship with Him in His word and prayer.
Have you talked to God today? If not, why not stop right now and…Tell Him you’re sorry. Tell Him you love Him. Thank Him for His grace and mercy. And make a commitment that God is the first Person that you talk to each morning.
Psalm 63:1(NKJV)
O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water.
Psalm 5:3(NKJV)
3 My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; In the morning I will direct it to You, And I will look up.
It’s important to notice the behaviors and attitudes that led to Israel and Judah being exiled and apply those same behaviors and attitudes to modern-day parallels.
The people, including the national and religious leaders did not listen to Jeremiah or the other prophets as they warned about the impending loss of their freedom because of their sins.
But, which sins?
Notice how they rejected Jeremiah’s warnings because they said, “They had plenty of food and were well off” when they served idols as their fathers did (Jeremiah 44:16-17).
Many Americans don’t think of pride as a sin.
Many Americans can’t see how prioritizing the economy over God’s standards can become a stumbling block.
Too many people can’t see how refusing to reject the sins and practices of ‘our fathers’ can lead to God’s wrath.
The excerpts above are from Jeremiah 43 and 44. Please go back and read them in context with the entire chapter.
Idols aren’t just made of wood and stone. Sometimes we live in them. Sometimes we drive them. Sometimes our practices have turned into a subtle worship of our institutions.
Pride, arrogance and traditions will destroy America before anything else does.
