WHEN ‘SO-CALLED FRIENDS’ SAY, “HEY! I HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU…”

I admit this is a pet peeve of mine.

Has this ever happened to you?

They may be a past classmate…co-worker…cousin… or acquaintance.

They may be a ‘FRIEND’ or ‘FOLLOWER’ on social media who SEES YOU, but never interacts or reacts to anything you post, share or create.

They may be someone on the outer fringes of your ‘circle’, but they never really have anything to do with you.

They may be someone from your past who willingly drifted away.

But, they suddenly reach out to you…

Out of the blue they message you…

Unexpectedly someone let’s you know they want to talk to you.

It’s usually something like this…

“Hey! How’s it been going?”

“Your name came up the other day!”

“We need to catch up!”

“How’s your family?”

“I noticed your post the other day!”

They really could care less about how it’s going; catching up; your family; and they’ve intentionally ignored your posts and accomplishments UNTIL THEY WANTED SOMETHING FROM YOU.

They may have started an insurance agency…

They may have gotten into financial planning…

They may have launched their own business…

They may be in sales…

It may even be the latest multi-level marketing scheme.

And, your name crossed their mind as a possible prospect… client… or customer.

Calling out someone else’s pettiness isn’t petty.

Real friends don’t take advantage of your kindness and insult your intelligence with the pretend-to-care questions that proceed a sales pitch. If you want to be friends…cool, but don’t insult their intelligence trying to get into their pockets like a drunk guy trying to get into a woman’s underwear.

Even though Jesus recognized the value in being shrewd in business, there’s a difference in being shrewd and being crude.

Luke 16:3-9 (NKJV)

“The manager thought to himself, ‘Now what? My boss has fired me. I don’t have the strength to dig ditches, and I’m too proud to beg. Ah, I know how to ensure that I’ll have plenty of friends who will give me a home when I am fired.’ “So he invited each person who owed money to his employer to come and discuss the situation. He asked the first one, ‘How much do you owe him?’ The man replied, ‘I owe him 800 gallons of olive oil.’ So the manager told him, ‘Take the bill and quickly change it to 400 gallons.[a]“‘And how much do you owe my employer?’ he asked the next man. ‘I owe him 1,000 bushels of wheat,’ was the reply. ‘Here,’ the manager said, ‘take the bill and change it to 800 bushels.[b]“The rich man had to admire the dishonest rascal for being so shrewd. And it is true that the children of this world are more shrewd in dealing with the world around them than are the children of the light. Here’s the lesson: Use your worldly resources to benefit others and make friends. Then, when your possessions are gone, they will welcome you to an eternal home.[c]

Have you been annoyingly prospected? Or have you done it yourself?

Save your so-called opportunity for those who are really in your circle and strangers. If you really cared, They would have heard from you before now…please walk on by.
