5 THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN YOU’RE FEELING DEPRESSED ABOUT THE BAD DECISIONS YOU’VE MADE…

We have all been there. Those moments when you aren’t angry at God. You aren’t angry at God. You aren’t angry at the world…you’re angry at yourself and the sins, bad decisions and mistakes you have made.

Most of the time we feel this way because we’re living out the consequences of those mistakes, or it’s because we are silently noticing how our decisions have had a negative affect on those we love.

Yes, there are things beyond our control. Yes, there are times the world hasn’t been fair to us. And, yes there are times that God could have moved on our behalf and He didn’t.

But when we’re honest with ourselves, much of the difficulty we face in life is a result of our own sins or bad decisions.

When we admit this to ourselves, it can lead to moments or seasons of depression. So, what do you do?

1. REMEMBER THOSE USED BY GOD IN THE BIBLE WERE FAR FROM PERFECT

Remember that everyone in the bible who was used by God was far from perfect. From Abraham, Isaac and Jacob to the patriarchs. From Noah to Moses to David to Peter to Paul. From Sarah to Rebecca to Miriam to Job’s wife…the men and women in the bible made horrible mistakes. However, they were still used by God.

2. YOU DIDN’T CATCH GOD BY SURPRISE WHEN YOU MESSED UP

God was not surprised when he sinned with Bathsheba. God knew that was going to happen when He anointed David king years before. Also know that YOU didn’t catch God by surprise when you messed up. Especially if it’s due to one of the weaknesses that He gave you. Many of our weaknesses are innate. Some people are naturally horrible with managing money. Others have an unquenchable appetite for sex that can only be controlled with the help of God’s Holy Spirit. While other people have a natural tendency to quickly get angry and act before thinking. These are all weakness that we need God’s help to overcome. This is His way of nurturing a relationship to keep us close to Him…but too many times we allow our weaknesses to overpower our strengths. Never forget that His strength is made perfect in our weaknesses…

2 Corinthians 12:8-10 (NKJV)

8ย Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me.ย 9ย And He said to me,ย โ€œMy grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.โ€ย Therefore most gladlyย I will rather boast in my infirmities,ย that the power of Christ may rest upon me.ย 10ย Thereforeย I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christโ€™s sake.ย For when I am weak, then I am strong.

3. GOD MADE YOU AND KNOWS THE CHALLENGES OF LIVING IN ‘FLESH’

God knows that the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak (Matthew 26:41)

He has compassion on us when we are repentant about our ‘human’ moments…

Psalm 103:10-14 (NKJV)

10ย He has not dealt with us according to our sins,
Nor punished us according to our iniquities.

11ย For as the heavens are high above the earth,
Soย great is His mercy toward those who fear Him;
12ย As far as the east is from the west,
Soย far has Heย removed our transgressions from us.
13ย As a father pitiesย hisย children,
Soย theย Lordย pities those who fear Him.
14ย For Heย [a]knows our frame;
He remembers that weย areย dust
.

4. GOD CAN DELIVER US FROM THE CONSEQUENCES OF OUR SINS, BAD DECISIONS AND WEAKNESSES

God is a keeper ( Yehovah Raah, The Lord is our Shepherd) and is able to sustain us in spite of our mistakes. There are those who have made the same mistakes you have and have lost much more… have suffered much more… and some didn’t even survive. But, He kept you…sustained you… nurtured you… and had mercy on you through your weakest, darkest moments. David remained king after he repented and remained a man after God’s heart. God restored to Job twice as much as he had after he prayed for his friends who made his ordeal much worse (Job 42:10-17). After denying Christ, Peter went on to be one of the most influential Apostles. No matter what you’ve done, if you repent and it’s God’s will, He can deliver you from the consequences of your sins, bad decisions and weaknesses. Especially if it’s an innate weakness He gave you. Make this prayer a part of your regular prayer life:

“Heavenly father, I truly repent of how I have let you down. Please forgive me and if it’s your will deliver me from the consequences of my sins, bad decisions and weakness.”

5. REMEMBER THAT GOD ALLOWS US MOMENTS TO LAMENT AS LONG AS WE STILL PROCLAIM OUR TRUST IN HIM

One of the most beautiful things about the Psalms is that they teach us how to express our regret and even question Him in respect as long as we end those moments reaffirming our trust in Him.

Psalm 13 (NIV)

1ย How long,ย Lord? Will you forget meย forever?
ย ย ย ย How long will you hide your faceย from me?
2ย How long must I wrestle with my thoughts
ย ย ย ย and day after day have sorrow in my heart?
ย ย ย ย How long will my enemy triumph over me?

3ย Look on meย and answer,ย Lordย my God.
ย ย ย ย Give light to my eyes,ย or I will sleep in death,
4ย and my enemy will say, โ€œI have overcome him,โ€
ย ย ย ย and my foes will rejoice when I fall.

5ย But I trust in your unfailing love;
ย ย ย ย my heart rejoices in your salvation.
6ย I will singย theย Lordโ€™s praise,
ย ย ย ย for he has been good to me.

So, don’t be too hard on yourself wen you’re feeling down and depressed. God made you and He knows you. Just as parents don’t enjoy seeing their children cry when they are truly sorry of their mistakes, God is compassionate. Do just what David did as he lamented the kidnapping of their women and children and bore the blame of those closest to him. Encourage and strengthen yourself in the LORD and keep it moving! Remember, God gave him the victory then too.

1 Samuel 30 (NKJV)

Now it happened, when David and his men came toย Ziklag, on the third day, that theย Amalekites had invaded the South and Ziklag, attacked Ziklag and burned it with fire,ย 2ย and had taken captive theย women and those whoย wereย there, from small to great; they did not kill anyone, but carriedย themย away and went their way.ย 3ย So David and his men came to the city, and there it was, burned with fire; and their wives, their sons, and their daughters had been taken captive.ย 4ย Then David and the people whoย wereย with him lifted up their voices and wept, until they had no more power to weep.ย 5ย And Davidโ€™s twoย wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite, had been taken captive.ย 6ย Now David was greatly distressed, forย the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people wasย [a]grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters.ย But David strengthened himself in theย Lordย his God.

WHY DID GOD ‘CREATE’ EVIL IN 80 WORDS…

Evil is a reality and absolute just like good (9).

You can’t have good without evil just as you can’t have right without left… (23)

Just like you can’t have up without down. (30)

But, just as up without down changes in outer space. (40)

Good and evil will change when Yeshua the Messiah (Jesus Christ) returns. (51)

God uses both for His purpose in this age (Good to bless — Evil for discipline). (66)

However, God will separate good from evil for eternity when Yeshua the Messiah returns. (80)

Proverbs 16:4 (NKJV)

The Lord has made all for Himself,
Yes, even the wicked for the day of [a]doom.

Genesis 50:20 (NKJV)

20 But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.

Isaiah 10:5-6 (NKJV)

โ€œWoe to Assyria, the rod of My anger
And the staff in whose hand is My indignation.
I will send him against an ungodly nation,
And against the people of My wrath
I will give him charge,
To seize the spoil, to take the prey,
And to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

Matthew 13:24-30 (NKJV)

24 Another parable He put forth to them, saying: โ€œThe kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field; 25 but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way. 26 But when the grain had sprouted and produced a crop, then the tares also appeared. 27 So the servants of the owner came and said to him, โ€˜Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?โ€™ 28 He said to them, โ€˜An enemy has done this.โ€™ The servants said to him, โ€˜Do you want us then to go and gather them up?โ€™ 29 But he said, โ€˜No, lest while you gather up the tares you also uproot the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, โ€œFirst gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.โ€ โ€™

3 REASONS WHY A LOVING GOD ALLOWS EVILโ€ฆ

WHY GOD ALLOWED PEOPLE TO BE STONED IN THE OLD TESTAMENT, BUT NOT NOWโ€ฆ

BE BLESSTIFIED!

THE (1) ONE WAY TO REMOVE GENERATIONAL CURSES…

One of the things about the Old Testament is that it gives us extreme examples of what God loves and what He hates. His extreme judgements explicitly gave us insight into how He feels, reacted as well as spiritual concepts and laws that are still relevant today…

1 Corinthians 10:11 (NKJV)

11ย Nowย [a]all these things happened to them as examples, andย they were written for ourย [b]admonition,ย upon whom the ends of the ages have come.

Romans 15:4 (NKJV)

4ย Forย whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through theย [a]patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.

One of those concepts is generational curses. That’s when God places a curse on an individual that continues to transfer to his or her posterity. Seems pretty unfair huh? But, it’s been that way since the Garden of Eden after Adam and his wife sinned.

When you read Deuteronomy 28 God lists the blessings of obedience and the curses of disobedience. These blessings and curses are generational…

Deuteronomy 28:45-46 (NKJV)

45 โ€œMoreover all these curses shall come upon you and pursue and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you [a]did not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you. 46 And they shall be upon you for a sign and a wonder, and on your DESCENDANTS FOREVER.

Forever is a long time. Seems unfair doesn’t it?

But, there is a reason for this.

Whenever God cursed or punished His people, what was it that always removed the curse, that would have otherwise remained FOREVER?

WHEN THEY REPENTED!

Leviticus 26:40-42 (NKJV)

40 โ€˜But if they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers, with their unfaithfulness in which they were unfaithful to Me, and that they also have walked contrary to Me,

41 and that I also have walked contrary to them and have brought them into the land of their enemies;

if their uncircumcised hearts are humbled, and they accept their guiltโ€”

42 then I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and My covenant with Isaac and My covenant with Abraham I will remember;

I will remember the land.

1 John 1:9  (NKJV)

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Think about your family and the attitudes, habits, thoughts and behaviors that have gone on for generations. How many of them can STOP with your generation?

If you feel your family is under the generational power of dysfunction, promiscuity, homosexuality, addiction, arrogance, pride, shame, racism, poverty, anger, witchcraft, violence, sickness etc,….

SOME OF THESE CURSES COULD STOP WITH YOUR GENERATION IF YOU CHANGE GENERATIONAL BEHAVIOR IN OTHER AREAS.

As much as parents and grandparents love their children, no one ever does everything RIGHT. God consistently reminded Israel of the ‘sins of their fathers.’

Stop and think about the things that your parents and grandparents did that were not pleasing to God, but may have continued through tradition, bad teaching or simply because ‘that’s the way we do things’.

Be bold enough to change it the way that Hezekiah did not continue in the sins of the kings before him. He TORE DOWN the alters and evil practices of those who came before him…

2 Kings 18:1-5  (NKJV)

18 Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea the son of Elah, king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz, king of Judah, began to reign. He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His motherโ€™s name was Abi[a] the daughter of Zechariah. And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father David had done.
He removed the [b]high places and broke the sacred pillars, cut down the [c]wooden image and broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made; for until those days the children of Israel burned incense to it, and called it [d]Nehushtan. He trusted in the Lord God of Israel, so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor who were before him.

What ‘alters’ do you need to tear down in your family?

CONFESS. REPENT. and BREAK THE CURSE.

Now, read Nehemiah Chapter 9 and notice that after they were allowed by God to return from exile, they confessed not only their sins, but the sins of their ancestors. Notice in BOLD print each time the people confessed their sin…

NEHEMIAH 9 (NKJV)

9ย Now on the twenty-fourth day ofย this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, in sackcloth,ย and withย [a]dust on their heads.ย 2ย Thenย those of Israelite lineage separated themselves from all foreigners; and they stood andย confessed their sins and the iniquities of their fathers.ย 3ย And they stood up in their place andย read from the Book of the Law of theย Lordย their Godย for one-fourth of the day; andย for anotherย fourth they confessed and worshiped theย Lordย their God.

4ย Then Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani,ย andย Chenani stood on theย [b]stairs of the Levites and cried out with a loud voice to theย Lordย their God.ย 5ย And the Levites, Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah,ย andย Pethahiah, said:

โ€œStand upย andย bless theย Lordย your God
Forever and ever!

โ€œBlessed beย Your glorious name,
Which is exalted above all blessing and praise!

Which is exalted above all blessing and praise!
6ย You aloneย areย theย Lord;
You have made heaven,
The heaven of heavens, withย all their host,
The earth and everything on it,
The seas and all that is in them,
And Youย preserve them all.
The host of heaven worships You.

7ย โ€œYouย areย theย Lordย God,
Who choseย Abram,
And brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans,
And gave him the nameย Abraham;
8ย You found his heartย faithful before You,
And made aย covenant with him
To give the land of the Canaanites,
The Hittites, the Amorites,
The Perizzites, the Jebusites,
And the Girgashitesโ€”
To giveย itย to his descendants.
Youย have performed Your words,

For Youย areย righteous.

โ€œYouย saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt,
Andย heard their cry by the Red Sea.
10ย Youย showed signs and wonders against Pharaoh,
Against all his servants,
And against all the people of his land.
For You knew that theyย actedย [c]proudly against them.
So Youย made a name for Yourself, asย it isย this day.

11ย And You divided the sea before them,
So that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land;
And their persecutors You threw into the deep,
As a stone into the mighty waters.
12ย Moreover Youย led them by day with a cloudy pillar,
And by night with a pillar of fire,
To give them light on the road
Which they should travel.

13 โ€œYou came down also on Mount Sinai,
And spoke with them from heaven,
And gave them just ordinances and true laws,
Good statutes and commandments.
14 You made known to them Your holy Sabbath,
And commanded them precepts, statutes and laws,
By the hand of Moses Your servant.
15 You gave them bread from heaven for their hunger,
And brought them water out of the rock for their thirst,
And told them to go in to possess the land
Which You had [d]sworn to give them.

โ€œButย they and our fathers actedย [e]proudly,
Hardened[f]ย their necks,

And did not heed Your commandments.
17ย They refused to obey,
Andย they were not mindful of Your wonders
That You did among them.
But they hardened their necks,
Andย [g]in their rebellion
They appointedย a leader
To return to their bondage.

But Youย areย God,
Ready to pardon,
Gracious and merciful,
Slow to anger,
Abundant in kindness,
And did not forsake them.

18ย โ€œEvenย when they made a molded calf for themselves,
And said, โ€˜Thisย isย your god
That brought you up out of Egypt,โ€™
And worked great provocations,
19ย Yet in Yourย manifold mercies

You did not forsake them in the wilderness.
Theย pillar of the cloud did not depart from them by day,
To lead them on the road;
Nor the pillar of fire by night,
To show them light,
And the way they should go.

You also gave Yourย good Spirit to instruct them,
And did not withhold Yourย manna from their mouth,
And gave themย water for their thirst.
21ย Forty years You sustained them in the wilderness;
They lacked nothing;
Theirย clothes did not wear out
And their feet did not swell.

22ย โ€œMoreover You gave them kingdoms and nations,
And divided them intoย [h]districts.
So they took possession of the land ofย Sihon,
[i]The land of the king of Heshbon,
And the land of Og king of Bashan.
23ย You also multipliedย their children as the stars of heaven,
And brought them into the land
Which You had told their fathers
To go in and possess.
24ย Soย theย [j]people went in
And possessed the land;
You subdued before them the inhabitants of the land,
The Canaanites,
And gave them into their hands,
With their kings

And the people of the land,
That they might do with them as they wished.

And they took strong cities and aย rich land,
And possessedย houses full of all goods,
Cisternsย alreadyย dug, vineyards, olive groves,
Andย [k]fruit trees in abundance.
So they ate and were filled andย grew fat,
And delighted themselves in Your greatย goodness.

26ย โ€œNevertheless theyย were disobedient
And rebelled against You,

Cast Your law behind their backs
And killed Yourย prophets, whoย [l]testified against them
To turn them to Yourself;
And they worked great provocations.
27ย Therefore You delivered them into the hand of their enemies,
Who oppressed them;
And in the time of their trouble,
When they cried to You,
Youย heard from heaven;
And according to Your abundant mercies
You gave them deliverers who saved them
From the hand of their enemies.

โ€œBut after they had rest,
They again did evil before You.
Therefore You left them in the hand of their enemies,
So that they had dominion over them;
Yet when they returned and cried out to You,
You heard from heaven;
Andย many times You delivered them according to Your mercies,
29ย Andย [m]testified against them,
That You might bring them back to Your law.

Yet they actedย [n]proudly,
And did not heed Your commandments,
But sinned against Your judgments,
โ€˜Which if a man does, he shall live by them.โ€™
And they shrugged their shoulders,
[o]Stiffened their necks,
And would not hear.
30ย Yet for many years You had patience with them,
Andย [p]testifiedย against them by Your Spiritย in Your prophets.
Yet they would not listen;
Therefore You gave them into the hand of the peoples of the lands.
31ย Nevertheless in Your great mercy
You did not utterly consume them nor forsake them;
For Youย areย God, gracious and merciful.

โ€œNow therefore, our God,
The great, theย mighty, and awesome God,
Who keeps covenant and mercy:
Do not let all theย [q]trouble seem small before You
That has come upon us,
Our kings and our princes,
Our priests and our prophets,
Our fathers and on all Your people,
From the days of the kings of Assyria until this day.

33ย Howeverย Youย areย just in all that has befallen us;
For You have dealt faithfully,
Butย we have done wickedly.

34ย Neither our kings nor our princes,
Our priests nor our fathers,

Have kept Your law,
Nor heeded Your commandments and Your testimonies,
With which You testified against them.
35ย For they haveย not served You in their kingdom,
Or in the many goodย thingsย that You gave them,
Or in the large and rich land which You set before them;
Nor did they turn from their wicked works.

โ€œHereย weย are,ย servants today!
And the land that You gave to our fathers,
To eat its fruit and its bounty,
Here weย are,ย servants in it!
37ย Andย it yields much increase to the kings
You have set over us,
Because of our sins;
Also they haveย dominion over our bodies and our cattle
At their pleasure;
And weย areย in great distress.

38ย โ€œAnd because of all this,
Weย make a sureย covenantย and writeย it;
Our leaders, our Levites,ย andย our priestsย sealย it.โ€

Now notice what God says to Israel in Leviticus Chapter 40 after giving them consequences of being disobedient…

Leviticus 26:40-45  (NKJV)

40 โ€˜But if they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers, with their unfaithfulness in which they were unfaithful to Me, and that they also have walked contrary to Me,

41 and that I also have walked contrary to them and have brought them into the land of their enemies;

if their uncircumcised hearts are humbled, and they accept their guiltโ€”

42 then I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and My covenant with Isaac and My covenant with Abraham I will remember;

I will remember the land.

43 The land also shall be left empty by them, and will enjoy its sabbaths while it lies desolate without them;

they will accept their guilt, because they despised My judgments and because their soul abhorred My statutes.

44 Yet for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not cast them away, nor shall I abhor them, to utterly destroy them and break My covenant with them;

for I am the Lord their God.

45 But for their sake I will remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God:

am the Lord.โ€™ โ€

What ‘sins of your fathers and mothers’ are you allowing to continue in another generation? What sins have you not rejected?

WHEN YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO GET BACK INTO THE RECORDING STUDIO (SHARE ANYWAY…)

I wrote the lyrics to this song back in 2001. It is my attempt at a song to give God sincere worship and praise either in worship or while you’re alone.

After recording three projects, my wife and I haven’t been able to get back into the studio. But as I stated in the video above, should one let the financial or industry challenges prevent him or her from sharing what God gave them to share with the world…with generations?

Does God intend for us to ‘find a way’ to share what He has given us rather than wait for years until circumstances allow it to be done the traditional way.

So, here I am sharing a snippet of a song He gave me almost twenty years ago.

I hope the lyrics bless your efforts to worship God…
