If your childhood was like mine, in school, there were the so-called ‘cool kids’, the so-called ‘nobodys’ and those who were bullied.
Many times, I would notice a ‘nobody’ or ‘nerd’ getting some attention from one of the ‘cool kids’, or getting some positive form of affirmation from someone else…
They may have been told they looked nice that day…
They may have been told they did a good job…
They may have been asked to sit at the ‘cool table’ at lunch…
They may have scored a goal or done well in gym class…
I would see the look of joy on the face of the ‘nobody’, the ‘nerd’, the bullied kid…
But then, I would notice one or more of the ‘cool kids’ quickly steal that moment of joy and put them back in their place. This is very well illustrated in the clip above from the 80’s movie, “Can’t Buy Me Love” .
How many times have you heard someone accuse someone else of needing too much affirmation?
The truth is we all need affirmation, but there are some people who, because of their personality, charisma, talent or even anointing, who naturally get MORE affirmation than others. And, it’s amazing how some of these people will accuse others of ‘needing too much affirmation’ especially when they feel it threatens theirs.
God, through Apostle Paul, admonished us to show affection to one another, and esteem one another higher to ourselves.
Romans 12:10 (NKJV)
10 Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another;
Philippians 2:3 (NKJV)
3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.
By doing so, positive attention will be reciprocated and we can all have our need for affirmation to be fulfilled.
There’s enough to go around for everyone.
